Dr. Dan McKenna MD FRCOG FRCPI

Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist/Subspecialist in Maternal-Fetal-Medicine

I was born and educated in the North of Ireland. I graduated in Medicine from  Queens University Belfast. My basic specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology was in Northern Ireland. During my higher specialist training, I completed two years of fulltime research under the supervision of  Professor Jim Dornan at the Royal Maternity Hospital in Belfast. My research work into ultrasound in pregnancy produced the sentinel report on the use of ultrasound in the apparent low-risk pregnancy.

I have published numerous other research papers in major scientific and peer-reviewed journals. Amongst others, I was first author in papers published in The Lancet in Britain and the Journal of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. This research work resulted in the higher degree of Doctor of Medicine, MD.

After my higher specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, I was successful in attaining an RCOG Subspecialty training post in Maternal-Fetal-Medicine. My subspecialty training was in Belfast and in Cape Town, South Africa. I am one of only two RCOG trained Subspecialists in Maternal-Fetal-Medicine in Cork.

Subspecialists in Maternal-Fetal-Medicine have specialist training in performing and interpreting detailed fetal ultrasound scans in the first, second and third trimester. They are proficient in invasive fetal procedures like amniocentesis and are expert in managing the twin and triplet pregnancy.

Subspecialists are qualified to look after mothers with complex medical conditions. Examples of these conditions are diabetes and patients with a history of blood clotting disorders.
